Their wings warn of the danger. A dark red like drying blood, attached to a body of metallic blue. Hooked claws adorn their legs, and the stingers on the females can be up to seven millimeters long. Their stingers are much too threatening, and because of them, the majority of animals don't dare attempt to consume the insect. The intensity of the sting has been described as "nauseatingly potent" and "excruciating." Many people just scream, unable to focus their brain on anything outside of the sting's epicenter. Justin O. Schmidt, an entomologist, categorized the sting as a 4.0—the strongest sting—in his self-created Schmidt Sting Pain Index.

03/14 The avoidance of an entire town is difficult, especially a very small town, a small town that I happened to grow up in. There is only one supermarket, one crusty movie rental shop, a few damned churches and banks, a handful of breakfast restaurants inhabited by retired people—the bare minimum number of places to successfully allow for a secluded existence. The "downtown" area is a joke, though the signs on the one main drag seem hell-bent on asserting its importance, calling the area "historic." Options are limited, and the people are, too. Three hours into the day his discarded breakfast sits on the wide windowsill the heel of a loaf of bread, overturned on a plate, with two haphazard spoons. His lips part and close over the round tip of his cigarette and then over the air. He is wearing a white shirt advertising Greece folding down upon itself around his waist. Across the window, a pattern of wet dots. Without curtains, the thin glass allows cold to seep through. The damp light falls in, over his arms and their raised veins. His skin chills and grows bumps. that's what i'm waiting for, darling

i am operating in an alternate dimension, one in which i get up at 2 in the afternoon and spend my day drinking coffee, downloading icons to enhance my desktop, choosing a small corner of my room to sift through for treasures, and watching "forensic files" and dr. phil. i am allowed to do this. it's summer. it's raining outside. i can be a very solitary person; there's nothing wrong with it. this is a time of discovery. my old lives, the ways i used to be, things i used to collect, things i used to enjoy -- i am finding them in the unexplored crevasses of my room. many of them will be auctioned off or given away or sold, but i will take pict

"it's never too late to be what you could have been."  --george eliot after all this midterm shit blows over, i'm going to edit a new story or two, and submit them here and to a couple lit reviews. i'm also going to embark on a series of personal essays (read: stories based on my life that hopefully won't sound based on my life), a la david sedaris, except less amusing. to help myself remember how it is to write, how it is to enjoy writing. and last, eventually, after this semester is over, i'm going to take actually engaging english classes. maybe even writing classes. i just need to hang in there.
